qualms: I Can’t Believe This

The vision of a "I Believe" plate bolted to a Hummer tooling down the South Carolina countryside would make James Watt proud. For the youngsters... Watt was Secretary of the Interior for the early part of Reagan's administration. He is famous for such memorable quotes as- “We don't have to protect the environment, the Second Coming is at hand”.

I think it depends on where the funds for these plates go - if they benefit the state, and not just residents of a certain religion, it would be perfectly fine.

So you'd be ok with having a plate that says "I Believe" in Arabic with an
image of a crescent if it funds the state?
  • Shawn Collins · 1 year ago
Yes, why not? How is this different from a bumper sticker, aside from that fact that the state can use it as a source of income?

I am not offended by the beliefs of others.

I'm just not a fan of our government raising funds based on the want of some
believers to express their faith (in the lame way of a license plate or in
an offering to a religious institution).

I have never had an interest in any of those customized plates, but I don't begrudge anybody else getting one.

Let people celebrate things that make them feel good, and if the state can leverage it to help others - all the better.

so, in other words... tax people's faith?
  • Shawn Collins · 1 year ago
No, in other words, allow people to choose to pay a premium if they wish.

I support allowing citizens to make choices.
